Letter from the Editor
By Susan R. Tripepi, The Compass Editor

Over the next few days, weeks and months we are going to see a great bit of change. Change in our nation, change in our cities and change in ASWA. With change there is always a sense of excitement but also a bit of fear. Although we are unsure what the future holds, we can be guaranteed that there will be change. Read more >

President's Message
By Barbara W. Covington, ASWA National President

History was made in our nation’s capital this week.  Barack Obama was sworn in as our 44th president.  President Obama ran his campaign on change and he sees change as an opportunity to rebuild from the ground up.  He said, “You can’t stop change from coming, you need to usher it in and then work out the terms.”  Obama wants to usher in a change in ethics and create more transparency in the government.  One of the goals in the coming months is to continue to communicate with America and possibly bring back the “fireside chats” from the Roosevelt administration.  He would like his cabinet members to host town hall meetings to keep the American public informed on the latest in each department.  Read more >

Executive Director's Message
By Lee K. Lowery, MPA, ASWA Executive Director

As we embark on the New Year, it’s always a good time to take a look at the way we approach life, both personally and professionally, and determine if there are improvements that we can make to enhance it.  As ASWA’s Executive Director, I often hear about chapters’ struggles to get volunteers.  This problem is not unique to ASWA.  According to Lynda McDaniel, author of “A Long Engagement” in the January issue of Associations Now, “As spare time becomes harder to find, more people are turning away from long-term commitments.” Read more >

Worker, Retiree and Employer Recovery Act of 2008
CCH a Wolters Kluwer business

The continuing drumbeat of bad economic news has spurred the lame-duck Congress to pass an emergency package of pension recovery provisions and pension-related technical corrections. The Worker, Retiree, and Employer Recovery Act of 2008 ( H.R. 7327), approved by Congress on December 11, suspends required minimum distributions from 401(k) plans, IRAs and similar retirement accounts for 2009, provides pension plan funding relief and includes technical corrections to the Pension Protection Act of 2006. Foundation Update
By Denisa Jones, CPA, Foundation Director

It is hard to believe that we are half way through the fiscal year for the American Society of Women Accountants Educational Foundation (The Foundation).  Since we have just completed the season of college bowl games and we wait in anticipation of the Super Bowl, I thought now would be a good time to look at the first half and plan for the remainder of the game.
