Letter from the Editor
By Kathryn Sharp, CPA, The Compass Editor

At 32 years of age, as a newly single mom of four and a high school dropout, I entered college absolutely clueless.  The only things I knew were that I had wanted to become an accountant since I was 13 and that I had to find some way to support myself and my family.  Being an overachiever at heart, I graduated summa cum laude after three and a half years and went to work for a national accounting firm.    Read more >

President's Message
By Stacey L. Craig, CPA, ASWA National President

No matter where you are in your career path, you are never to old (or young) to continue learning.  Education is the backbone of our organization and through the American Society of Women Accountants (ASWA), we can assist you in continuing your educational journey.  Your journey can start at the local, regional and national levels with continuing professional education (CPE) sessions offered across the country.  Read more >

Executive Director's Message
Lee K. Lowery, MPA

I consider myself a “traditional” student in that I entered college upon graduation of high school in order to obtain my bachelors degree.  There are probably many traditional students who, like me, enter college without really knowing what they “want to be when they grow up.”  Since I hadn’t figured this out yet, I decided that because I had an interest in politics, I should pursue a political science degree, which I did.    Read more >

Post Recession Job Search Strategies
By Ali Lawrence
To seniors, the unemployed, and the unhappily employed: happy days are here again.  According to Chairman of the Federal Reserve System, Ben Bernanke, “The prospects for a return to growth in the near term appear good.”1   This is a direct quote per a New York Times article dated August 21, 2009, not just wishful thinking on my part.  Before we start the celebration though, we must take time to reflect somberly on the events of the last couple of months and their impact on our current and future job searches. Remembering Myra Grainger
By Dianna Patton, ASWA National Director
Back in August this year, Melody King and I, both from the ASWA Richmond Chapter, took a road trip back in history.  We visited Myra Granger - Richmond’s oldest member.  Myra joint ASWA in 1958 and served as Chapter President from 1962-1964.  Myra was very active in our chapter and remained in touch after she moved to North Carolina to live with her daughter.  Read more >

Your Chapter Website as a Marketing Tool
By Donna Reed
Do you think of your chapter’s website as a marketing tool?  Are you proud of the image it conveys to prospective members?  The answer to both questions should be “yes.”  In today’s digital world, the first place people look when wanting information is the Web.  Oftentimes, that is as far as they go.  They look at the website and base their decision on what they see.   What would be a prospective member’s decision if they looked at your chapter’s website?  Is your chapter using this valuable marketing tool to its full potential? Foundation Update
By Mary Burns, CPA, Foundation Chair

Each year, the ASWA Educational Foundation recognizes companies whose commitment to work/life balance and individuals whose influence on others in the profession have placed them in the enviable position of earning the prestigious Foundation Award. There are three types of awards: The Balance Awards recognize companies demonstrating sensitivity to women within our industry, providing leadership and mentoring opportunities for women, involved in and showing concern for the financial issues facing their communities and those implementing policies, initiatives and programs promoting work-life balance.  Read more >

IRS Form 990 Update
Lee K. Lowery, Executive Director
As many chapter leaders are aware, the IRS Form 990-N (e-postcards) for ASWA's 501(c)(3) and (c)(6) group exemptions were due on November 15th.  ASWA Headquarters staff filed for each of the chapters that indicated last spring that they wished to be included in the group filings.  During this process, we learned that some chapters already filed the 990-N for their EIN(s) which was perfectly fine.
